ShoppingCHAMBERS GENERAL STORE - Chambers is an old-fashioned grocery-hardware store. Although you can get about anything there, specialties are fresh produce and fresh meat. They also provide fresh cheese and meat sandwiches from their deli counter at a modest price. During the holidays fresh turkeys are available. In addition to being a General Store, Chambers is the traditional location for many notices concerning sales and special occasions that are going to take place. You will find yourself depending on Chambers General Store for many of your general needs. One of the newest offerings is their drop off service for film developing. Inquire at Chambers for more information. Their hours are 8 - 5:30 p. m. Monday thru Saturday and their phone number is 829-4478.BETHANY COLLEGE BOOKSTORE - This important part of Bethany College is located by Boomers Snack Bar. The store carries a large variety of books, cards and other stationary type items, as well as, Bethany College sportswear and other gift items. It is open during the school year from 9:00 - 4:30 Monday thru Thursday, 9:00 - 4:00 on Friday and Saturday's 11:00 a. m. to 1:00 p. m. During the summer their hours are Monday thru Friday 9 - 12 and 1 - 4. Its' phone number is 829-7255. Sometime during the school year either in the fall or in the spring they have a big sale. It is important to mention that faculty or staff employees of the College can receive a 20% discount on the majority of items in the bookstore and receive a 10% discount on personal textbooks ordered. Cap and gown rental or purchases arealso available. Ann Craft is the Manage of the bookstore and its phone number is (304) 829-7260. BISON INN - This business is located on the main street of town and it is not an inn but a local pub and it caters to students, alumni and faculty. This pub is open during the school year only. Their phone number is (304) 829-4508. ERICKSON ALUMNI CENTER - Located in the former site of McLean & McEachern Halls, this center was named in honor of Charles O. Erickson, who provided the initial funding for this project in the spring of 1991. Robert L. Martin, a Bethany College graduate of 1940, provided all the furnishings for the interior and made possible the Alumni Conference Room and the seven Martin Guests Rooms, which house seven visitors or alumni in the Erickson Alumni Center. Two trustees of Bethany College, Anne Wilkin Trombadors and Charles Bell donated funds to bring about the Wilkin Parlor, which is a lovely decorated and furnished sitting room for alumni and guests in the Erickson Alumni Center. The center was dedicated in 1992 and houses the offices of the Director of Alumni Relations, Church Relations, Development Office and the Public Information and Publications Office. The phone number for the Erickson Alumni Center is (304) 829-7420. GRESHAM HOUSE - It is another guest facility in Bethany and it was named in honor of Bethany's twelfth president, Dr. Perry E. Gresham and his wife, Aleece. It provides 40 rooms for overnight accommodations for visitors of the college. Gresham House is located on Route 88 South and can be seen as you approach from Route 67 East. Their phone number is 829-7625. HARDER HALL - This facility adjoins Gresham House. It honors Delmar C. Harder, a pioneer in automation in the American auto industry. Harder Hall serves as a special dining area for groups. Its phone number is 829-7492. WELLSBURG (take Route 67 West) Wellsburg is the closest town for shopping and it consists of many shops and among them are three banks, two grocery stores, one library, a co-op store, several drug stores, two variety stores, two car dealerships, one video store, several eating places (fast food and formal), several gift shops, two lumber stores (one in Wellsburg and one south of Wellsburg in Beech Bottom), two hardware stores, several auto parts stores, a paint and well papering store, a dry cleaners, several gasoline stations and a coin operated laundry. The following are two businesses newcomers to Bethany will find helpful. SPEED QUEEN - (Laundry Mart) - This business is located on the left-hand side of Route 2 North in Wellsburg. Its hours are 7:30 a. m. - 10:00 p. m. 7 days a week and its phone number is (304) 737-0081. An attendant is always on duty. Four heavy-duty machines ($2.00 each) and 24 regular washers ($1.25- 5 quarters - 30 minutes each) and dryers cost 25 cents for 12 minutes. Drop-off laundry, moneychanger, soap and laundry needs are available at a modest price. DROVER'S INN - (historic restaurant) - Innkeepers are Mark & Karen- This business is located on Route 27 West and (Washington Pike). Leaving Bethany take Route 88 North and turn left at the intersection of Route 27 West and Pa. 844. As you proceed on Route 27 West, Drover's Inn is on your right- hand side. It provides home-cooked dinners with a salad bar. Besides serving dinner, Drover's Inn also has a tavern and gift shop. On Thursday nights a specialty of the house in the tavern are "Hot Wings" that are delicious hot barbecued chicken wings that are served cheaply when a beverage is ordered. Dinner is served Wednesday thru Saturday 5:00 p. m. to 9:00 p. m. and Sunday Noon to 7:00 p. m. The Tavern hours are 5:00 p. m. till 11:00 p. m. Wednesday and Thursday and 5:00 p. m. to 1:00 a. m. on Friday and Saturday. Sunday the tavern is open from 1:00 p. m. to 7:00 p. m. The gift shop which features antique collectibles, country crafts, scented gifts and potpourri is open Wednesday thru Saturday 2:00 to 9:00 p. m. and Sunday 12 Noon to 7:00 p. m. The Drover's Inn also caters to club parties, showers, wedding rehearsal dinners, small weddings, business meetings and luncheons. For party reservations and information call (304) 737-0188.
W E S T L I B E R T Y West Liberty is about 15 minutes away from Bethany and is the home of the West Liberty State College. It is a small town but it does have a few businesses. Among the businesses are the following: Liberty Grocery - It has a nice variety of grocery items, a small deli, rental VCR tapes and is open from Monday - Saturday 9 - 9 and on Sunday 1 - 9. Their phone number is 336-7659. Wayne's Feed Store - a local feed store, no phone number available, but many bulk items are available at low prices. Domino's Pizza - they do deliver to Bethany and their phone number is 336-4400. WARWOOD (take Route 2 South) Among Warwood's many stores are Ben Franklin (sells Heggy's chocolates), Community Home- Care and Hospice, Elite Computer Technology, Family Dollar, Subway TCBY, Kroger's Express, Suzie Q Bakery, and True Value Hardware,. Completing the plaza is a Burger King restaurant and a Chinese Buffet. On a lot all by itself is the Rite Aid Pharmacy.
WH E E L I N G (Take Route 88 South and turn right on U. S. 40 West (National Road) or take Route 67 West into Wellsburg and turn left onto Route 2 South) One example of one of the specialized shops located in the Wheeling Historic Center Market is the following: Witt Candy, Cake & Wedding Shop - very near Coleman's Fish Market - phone (304) 233-7683 - hours Tuesday - Saturday 10 - 6 p. m. It sells Wilton supplies, molds for cakes and candy making and chocolate melts.
FO L L A N S B E E Follansbee is a community that is about 30 minutes away from Bethany. Take Route 67 West and turn right when you come to the intersection of Route 2 South and Route 2 North. It has a downtown district with many stores. It has two banks, a hardwood store, clothing stores, florists, eating places and a strip mall that includes a Subway, Burger King, More for Less grocery, Rite Aid drug store, Family Dollar Store,Tractor Supply Inc., Pets Supplies and Sharon's Attic Cards and Gifts. Also worth mentioning are two other stores:
WE I R T O N (Take Route 67 West and then Route 2 North) Weirton is another community near Bethany. To see the businesses in downtown Weirton, take Route 2 North instead of the Weirton By-Pass. Many businesses make up the business community in Weirton. By taking the Weirton By-Pass and exiting Three Springs Drive, you will see the K Mart Plaza on your left-hand side. It consists of Super K Mart, McDonalds, PayLess Shoe Source, Busy Beaver. Famous Hair, Books USA, Radio Shack, Fashion Bug, Parts America, Pizza Hut, General Nutrition Center (GNC), Western Auto, Ponderosa Steak House, Eat N Park Restaurant, Arby's and Burger King. Also nearby is a Kroger grocery store, Blockbuster Video and The Best Western Inn that has J. Holliday's Tavern inside the Inn. Also on the right-hand side of the road when you exit Three Springs Drive there is a Walmart. Also further down the road on the right-hand side of the road is a Wendy's Old- Fashioned Restaurant. ST E U B E N V I L L E, O H I O Steubenville, Ohio is about 40 minutes from Bethany. To get to Steubenville, take Route 67 West to Wellsburg. Turn right onto Route 2 and go north through Wellsburg and Follansbee. Stay in the left-hand lane and you will see a bridge and a traffic light. Once you have crossed that bridge you will be in Steubenville. The town
of Steubenville has an active downtown business community and a mall.
